BioGains don’t just sell BNG units, we offer a comprehensive solution
From outline gain plan to allocated units
NSIP schemes are consented through a development consent order rather than a planning application, so the BNG work runs alongside the design and examination. Here is where we fit in.
Share & consult
Share your outline gain plan and associated metric with us, talk us through your order limits and which Local Planning Authorities the scheme crosses. We require a baseline habitats plan with the BNG boundary.
Options
We will discuss options with you that may include securing or purchasing existing units from our inventory or a plan to create a bespoke solution to meet your project’s needs. BioGains have the in-house experience and expertise to source land, negotiate legal agreements, undertake baseline surveys, design complex habitat management plans and even undertake the habitat creation works to deliver a true turnkey solution if required.
Securing units
We are open to exploring a range of mechanisms for you to secure and pay for your units including long term reservations, whilst always giving you security of supply and a reliable fixed cost.
Purchase & allocation
As and when you need to call off units from our agreed position, you will find a quick and efficient process to ensure the allocation is placed on the register with all supporting paperwork provided, ensuring the consenting process flows smoothly.
Get in touch
Fill this in and we will aim to reply within 48 hours, Monday to Friday. If your enquiry is about a specific development, attach or mention your metric and we can quote straight away.
Trusted by developers, landowners and organisations across the country.
What infrastructure teams ask us first
Any application for a development consent order as of November 2026 must deliver at least 10% biodiversity net gain, measured with the statutory metric and secured for 30 years. Each project type has its own biodiversity gain statement from Defra, which has the same effect as the national policy statement it sits alongside.
Yes. Either from our existing stock of BNG units from registered Habitat Banks, or through a bespoke habitat bank that we will register to support your project. We are well placed to help source land, design and secure a bespoke bank to deliver the requirements of your NSIP project.
Not necessarily, but distance matters. The metric applies a spatial risk multiplier: units in the same local planning authority or National Character Area as the impact carry no penalty, neighbouring areas carry a small one, and further afield the penalty grows, so more units are needed for the same gain. Linear schemes often cross several authorities, which gives more scope to match units locally. We show the multiplier in every quote.
Yes. The gain statements expect as many units as reasonably possible to be secured before each phase commences, with a schedule for securing the rest set out in the outline gain plan and approved by the discharging authority. We can reserve units against later phases so the schedule is credible, and allocate them as each phase comes forward.
Only as a last resort. Statutory credits are deliberately priced above the market, the guidance requires two credits for every unit you are short, and you have to show the discharging authority why on-site and off-site units could not be found. Registered off-site units from a habitat bank are almost always the cheaper and more defensible route.
